Harambee Starlets advised on what to do after heavy defeat to Morocco

Harambee Starlets striker Violet Nanjala has urged the team to use the upcoming break to prepare thoroughly ahead of the CECAFA Women’s Championship, which kicks off next week.
Speaking after the international friendly match at the Village Sportif de Tanger Stadium in Morocco on June 4, 2025, she emphasised the need for focus and unity as the team regroups.
“We need to use this break to prepare well for our forthcoming assignments,” said Nanjala.
This call to regroup comes after the Harambee Starlets faced a tough outing in Morocco, where they suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat in an international friendly at the Village Sportif de Tanger Stadium in Tangier, Morocco.

The match exposed significant gaps in the Kenyan side’s defensive and offensive play, serving as a stark reminder of the challenges ahead.
Morocco took control early in the game, quickly capitalising on a slow start by the Starlets to take a 1-0 lead. Despite some positive spells in the first half, Kenya struggled to keep pace with the hosts after halftime.
Morocco’s attacking prowess was on full display as they scored four additional goals, securing a convincing 5-1 victory. The Starlets’ lone goal was a consolation in a match that highlighted defensive lapses and midfield struggles.
The Moroccan team, fresh off their historic qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, showcased why they are considered one of Africa’s rising powers in women’s football.
Harambee Starlets coach Beldine Odemba shared Nanjala’s sentiments, acknowledging the need for urgent tactical adjustments and stronger team cohesion ahead of CECAFA.
“This match was a tough lesson, but it highlights the areas we need to improve. We must work hard during this break to sharpen our strategy and boost team morale,” Odemba said.

The CECAFA Women’s Championship is a critical opportunity for the Starlets to regain form, build confidence, and prepare for upcoming competitions, including the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Rebuilding and refocusing
As the Starlets prepare for CECAFA, the focus will be on correcting the issues exposed in Morocco, particularly in defence and midfield. The team aims to use the break effectively to strengthen their game plan and improve performance.
Despite the setback, optimism remains high within the camp. With renewed focus and determination, the Harambee Starlets hope to bounce back and put in a strong showing at the CECAFA tournament.
