Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna has said the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is keen on taking power from President William Ruto in 2027.

Sifuna is one of the key ODM critics of the broad-based government formed when Ruto and Raila Odinga signed a common working plan. The city senator said the opposition party will field a presidential candidate in the next election.

“ODM exists to fight power in this democratic process. We still intend, and we have not given up on our quest to lead this country. We will be there to face everyone, including even William Ruto.

“And a natural consequence of that is we will make him a one-term president because we want to grab that power from him so that we can do the things we are saying. That is my answer.

“It does not matter how cleverly you frame this question. My views are never going to change because I continue to receive feedback that, even in his so-called development tours, he is facing a lot of resistance,” Sifuna said on May 8, 2025, during a morning talk show with a local TV station.

Marginalisation

Sifuna also touched on the issue of marginalisation in terms of development and pointed out the regions that have always supported ODM have been overlooked by governments.

“All of us who have been supporting Raila Odinga have been marginalised because of politics. ODM and the leader of ODM Raila Odinga is not a leader of the Luo. Raila Odinga is the leader of Kenya.

“His people, including Sifuna, who does not come from Nyanza, have been marginalised because of the position we have taken to support him. You go to the Coats, go to North Rift. I went to Baringo, where I have my chairman called Lekakimon. He is being marginalised because of his position as chairman of ODM in Baringo,” he continued.
