The Kenya Lionesses kicked off the 2025 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup with a brilliant 28-5 victory against Madagascar on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

“1st W in the bag… onto the next one,” Kenya Rugby Union posted on their X account on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

This win is a major step towards their goal and avenging their defeat to Madagascar last year. The team now prepares for a tough clash against South Africa on June 11, with the tournament winner securing a direct World Cup spot.

The Lionesses arrived in Madagascar determined to overturn their 29-22 loss from 2024. From the start, they controlled the game, keeping the ball and pressuring Madagascar’s defence. Phoebe Akinyi scored the first try, with Sinaida Mokaya adding the conversion. Madagascar hit back with a try just before halftime. But Kenya responded quickly, leading 12-5 at the break.

Lionesses dominate second half

In the second half, the Lionesses tightened their grip. Grace Okulu slotted a penalty in the 48th minute, extending the lead, then added a drop goal. The Lionesses again pounced on a Madagascar mistake to score another try. Sinaida Mokaya sealed the win with a late try, ending the match at 28-5. Kenya’s defence was outstanding, limiting Madagascar to just one try.

This victory is a crucial step towards the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup in England, with the tournament champion earning automatic qualification. This performance shows the Lionesses’ growth and ambition.

Their next challenge is a formidable South African side, who thrashed Uganda 62-7 in their first match. Beating the reigning champions would be a massive boost for Kenya’s title hopes. With a final pool game against Uganda on June 15, the Lionesses are building momentum and inspiring the future of women’s rugby in Africa.
