Eight-time Kenya Chess Premier League champions KCB are eyeing a flawless campaign as they return to action this weekend with back-to-back fixtures in Kisumu County.

The bankers who are currently at the top of the standings (after four unbeaten games) will take on Victoria Chess Club on Saturday before clashing with Maven Chess Club on Sunday in a double-header that could further cement their lead.

“Our league resumes this coming weekend, and it will be a good opportunity to once again gauge our strength against local teams. We are currently leading the table, and we wish to maintain our unbeaten run to the end of the season,” said head coach Benjamin Magana.

KCB head into the fixtures with renewed momentum after being crowned the top corporate team at the Kiambu Open Chess Tournament last weekend.

The tournament also saw notable individual feats; Joseph Muragu finished third in the open category, while FIDE Master Joyce Nyaruai bagged third place in the ladies’ section.

“There is tremendous improvement in the team. Everyone is working extremely hard to ensure that we continue dominating the league. We want to show that we have what it takes to reclaim the title. As we head to Kisumu, we are confident that we will have a good outing,” said Nyaruai.

The bankers, however, will be without teenage prodigy Robert Mcligeyo, who is currently in Cairo, Egypt, flying the national flag at the Africa Individual Chess Championship.
