Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has called on politicians to stop using the campaign season to deceive hawkers, boda boda riders, and other informal sector workers with false promises and handouts.

Speaking to residents in Zombe, Kitui East, on Thursday, 5 June 2025, Kindiki urged elected leaders to remain accountable and support all Kenyans consistently, not only during elections.

Stop seasonal promises

During his visit, the Deputy President criticized politicians who engage with market vendors and boda boda operators only when elections approach, offering small gifts like aprons and KSh100 cash to win votes.

“Let us stop waiting for the campaign period to remember hawkers and boda boda riders, only to mislead them with aprons and KSh100 handouts,” Kindiki said.

He stressed the importance of continuous development efforts beyond election cycles.

Highlighting the government’s initiative to construct over 400 markets nationwide, he noted that four new markets are already under construction in Kitui County.

“Local leaders must identify more sites to help improve livelihoods and create business opportunities,” Kindiki urged.

Development projects underway

Kindiki also highlighted key infrastructure projects, including the ongoing construction of the Kibwezi–Mutomo–Kitui Road.

He disclosed that KSh800 million has been secured to compensate individuals displaced by the road project.

The DP vowed to personally oversee the implementation of these projects, warning those who politicize development works to focus on serving the people instead.

“Those who used this road for political gains should now focus elsewhere,” he remarked.

Leadership with integrity

On the political front, Kindiki condemned leaders who spread misinformation and incite fear among the public. “Leadership should be about integrity and delivering results, not division or deceit,” he said.

He called on all political aspirants to present their achievements transparently, urging citizens not to be misled by “politics of deceit and conmanship.” “Politics is a competition, not a fight. It should not create enmity,” Kindiki added.

The Deputy President assured that the government will continue to promote peace and stability throughout the country. “Everyone has the right to seek leadership, but not by creating fear or tension,” he concluded.
