Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to pursue Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Eliud Lagat when he gets power.

Speaking in Githunguri Constituency, Kiambu County, on Thursday, June 12, 2025, Gachagua said that the deputy police boss is part of the government machinery that targeted him and is being used to silence dissidents.

“It is this Lagat that is being used to go after all the people saying Ruto is a one-term president. I want to tell him and all the other people in the DCI who are being used by this regime, “When we take charge of this government, you will have to face the court of law,” he said.

The DCP party leader put the deputy inspector general at the centre of the chaos that rocked his past political rallies.

Speaking at the same event, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba called for the end of police brutality and state-sponsored violence targeting young Kenyans. The legislator threatened to rally women for demonstrations if the DIG is not held accountable for the killing of Ojwang.

“If he (Lagat) will not resign, then I will lead all mothers in Kenya for demonstrations over the killing and maiming of our young people. Enough is enough,” she stated.

Gachagua’s remarks come amid widespread calls demanding the resignation of the police official.

In a joint statement read by former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi on June 11, 2025, the opposition issued a 24-hour ultimatum for the government to arrest the deputy inspector general.

“In light of the foregoing, we are calling, not just for the resignation, but for the arrest and arraignment in court of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat, within 24 hours from the issuance of these statements,” Muturi stated.

“We similarly demand that the junior officers currently being persecuted be given witness protection with immediate effect. Their lives, obviously, are in danger because they know the truth,” the statement read.
