Renowned televangelist Bishop Gilbert Deya has died in a horrific road accident along the Kisumu–Bondo Highway at Namba Kapiyo.

The tragic crash involved several vehicles, including one belonging to Siaya County.

Governor James Orengo confirmed the passing on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, expressing deep sorrow and regret over the incident.

He described the accident as a grievous tragedy that has shaken the community and noted the involvement of a county vehicle, calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“I have learnt with deep sorrow and regret of the passing on of Bishop Gilbert Deya in a horrific road accident that involved several vehicles, including one belonging to Siaya County,” Orengo posted.

In photos that had been surfacing online, a mangled vehicle belonging to the Siaya County Government could be seen sprawled by the roadside as onlookers observed intently.

Another car, a Toyota Noah, could also be seen extensively wrecked, its front end — up to the driver’s cabin — having crumpled inward.

Who was Bishop Deya?

Bishop Gilbert Deya was a Kenyan-born evangelist and founder of Gilbert Deya Ministries. Born on February 2, 1937, in Juja, Kiambu County, he was the eleventh of fifteen children.

Deya began his ministry in the 1970s, founding the Salvation of Jesus Christ Church in 1976, before establishing Gilbert Deya Ministries in the United Kingdom in 1997.

Deya lived in Britain from the mid-1990s until 2017, when he was extradited to Kenya to face charges relating to the abduction of children between 1999 and 2004.

Gilbert Deya Ministries attracted attention for its claims that Deya had the power to help infertile women conceive through prayer.

The ministry operated multiple church locations across the UK during its peak.

Over the years, the ministry faced scrutiny and investigations by regulatory authorities, including the UK Charity Commission. Deya was also arrested and charged with sexual offenses in the UK in 2013 but was found not guilty in 2014.

The case involving the children, often referred to in media reports as the ‘miracle babies’ controversy, included allegations of child trafficking.

Several women associated with the ministry were arrested, and DNA tests revealed that some children had no genetic link to their supposed mothers.

The Kenyan police issued an arrest warrant for Deya, who was subsequently extradited to face trial in Kenya.

Despite the challenges faced, Bishop Deya maintained his innocence throughout the legal process.

His ministry was widely known both in Kenya and among the diaspora, with followers who believed in his healing and spiritual gifts.
